Benzalkonium chloride has traditionally been used in laboratories for cold sterilization. Though it has been found to be primarily non-irritating to skin, the natural characteristic is one of rapid dissipation. You will see this in the few other products that contain benzalkonium chloride that are on the market. They will only be effective agains the bacteria that it can touch, and then **poof** it dissipates on the surface.

I need to insert the story of the first time I used this solution: We have a gelding who wears eggbar shoes who had a tendancy to get thrush every few weeks. (for 8 years!) When we first tried the Thrush Relief, I thought to myself "Lets see how long it takes... and what kind of regime we need to follow." When we brought the horses into the barn for the night, I cleaned out "Bucky's" feet... only to find them black, soft and stinking of thrush. I applied some of the Thrush Relief and spread it around with my fingers. The following morning, when I picked up his hooves to apply his "second dose".. I was astounded. It was completely gone... as if he'd never had it. I was rather pleased, but since I hadn't taken any photos, I thought I'd wait the few weeks that it took for him to come down with it again. .... Well, weeks turned into months.... no thrush. .... Finally, my partner said, "Have you noticed it's been 6 months now... and Buck still doesn't have Thrush?" I called Dr. Levi, PhD (who originally developed these solutions for the human medical industry) to ask what was happening here. This is what he said: "Aparently, with the solutions you've used before, the bacteria associated with thrush was killed on the surface of the frog and sole so it appeared to be gone.
